When is a Power Flush needed?

When hard water is heated, the natural minerals contained in the water break down into insoluble crystals which deposit out within water systems as a scale on the hottest surfaces. These are usually radiators, hot water cylinders and pipe work.

This scale not only restricts water flow, but acts as a very effective insulant, reducing heat transfer and efficiency. More fuel is required to heat the water and, in extreme cases, boilers may not be able to reach the designed operating temperature.

Heavy scale deposits can also lead to localized overheating, resulting in premature failure of heating appliances.

Your heating system needs a power flush.

Signs that you might need a power flush

There are a number of signs to look for before deciding to go ahead with the power flush process:

  • Some radiators are completely or partially cold
  • Radiators with pinhole perforation and leakage
  • Excessive noise from the boiler or the heating system pump
  • Radiators need frequent bleeding
  • Dark coloured water when you bleed the radiators and the
  • Slow warming of the heating system

What is power flushing?

A power flush is a cleansing process which aims to remove deposits of sludge, rust and any other debris from your central heating system using a pressurized mix of water and chemicals.

The contaminants, if left, can seriously affect the efficiency of a heating system and in severe cases a power flush is the only option available.

Why power flush?

Over a period of time your central heating system can become blocked and restrict the flow to your radiators making your system inefficient and more expensive to run.

Power flushing can remove all these problems and restore the system to better circulation and efficiency and even help reduce energy bills.

Is it really required?

It is also boilers manufacturers requirement that the power flush process is carried out if you intend to connect a new boiler to an old heating system.

This is because any contaminants already present in the heating system can quickly damage the internal pipe work of the new boiler.

How it works – The power flushing process

Our heating engineer use a powerful high flow/low pressure pumping unit to the central heating system and with the help of high strength cleansing chemicals will flush out anything in the system.

The chemicals used during a powerflush include a sludge crust breaker and remover to help get rid of rust and sludge, a descaler to break down limescale and a corrosion inhibitor to stop further rusting from occurring. The crust breaker and remover are acid-based so that they help to combat any rust present and any other debris, such as sand particles, that might have settled in the radiators, pipes and boiler. The power flushing pump is fitted with a special magnetic filter which reduce the circulation of iron oxide through the boiler. At the end of the process there is no acid left in the central heating system’s water.
